Breast Reduction Surgery and Breast Feeding

Women with large breasts often suffer chronic pain involving the neck, back and shoulders and suffer from headaches and rashes under the breasts. The ability to exercise and engage in physical activity are diminished in a women with large breasts, as is her feeling of self-confidence diminished.

Breast reduction surgery is done under general anesthesia in approximately two to four hours and you may return home following your procedure. There is no need for an overnight stay.. Moderate discomfort is to be expected for three to seven days after surgery that is easily controlled with pain medication.

In general, breast reduction surgery is more likely to interfere with nursing than breast augmentation surgery. However, there is an excellent chance you will be able to nurse if your nipple and areola are still attached to breast tissue. Damage to the nerves, milk ducts and breast tissue may limit your milk flow and diminish sensation in your nipples. The ability to nurse is usually retained because only the skin surrounding the nipple is manipulated, not the nipple itself.

Bruising or swelling improves in two to four weeks with the assistance of a sports bra or ace bandage and you will be able to return to work in one to three weeks if your job is not physically demanding.

Residents of Newport Beach, California who are interested in breast reduction surgery may contact Douglas L. Hendricks at Pacifica Cosmetic Surgery Center today to obtain more information about this procedure from a highly trained and qualified surgeon.
