Breast Reduction Questions
Newport Beach – Orange County – California
Who is an ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction surgery is best suited to women who:
- Have different sized breasts
- Have breasts that are disproportionate to their body frame
- Experience back, neck, or shoulder pain due to large breasts
- Experience rashes or skin irritation underneath sagging breasts
- Are unable to participate in various physical activities due to the size of their breasts
- Are generally dissatisfied with the appearance and shape of their breasts
Are the breast reduction incisions noticeable?
As with all incisions, the appearance will depend greatly on your body’s ability to heal, and your skins reaction to the cuts. In most cases, the visibility of the scars will be greatly reduced with time. Having a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Hendricks perform the surgery will also greatly reduce your risks of long-term, visible scaring.
Is the breast reduction procedure dangerous?
Breast reduction surgery is a safe, effective way to impact your life for the better. However, with all surgical procedures, some risks are involved. Excessive bleeding, swelling, and infection along the incision are all possible risk factors. Some people may also experience increased risk due to general anesthesia. Complications with breast reduction are rare.
How long will it take to recover from breast reduction surgery?
Full recovery takes up to four weeks. Within the first few days you will have surgical dressing to help keep the incisions clean. In the weeks following, a support bra is recommended to reduce swelling and provide additional support during the recovery process. It is advisable to avoid strenuous physical activities in the day immediately following surgery, but you should be able to resume normal activities within a few short weeks.
Can I still breastfeed?
Breast reduction surgery does not require the nipple to be removed from its underlying tissue. As such, nipple sensation and functionality is not usually impacted. It is, however, advisable to wait until your breasts are fully matured and you are done having children to have breast reduction surgery. Age, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can all impact the size and shape of your breasts.
