Cosmetic surgery of any kind — a tummy tuck, breast augmentation,or a facelift — is a major event in anyone's life. If you can plan its timing and minimize its cost, there can be less of an impact on your daily activities, your relationships, and your budget.

When starting to plan a cosmetic surgery procedure it is wise to determine the exact cost including any possible extra costs. Sometimes you will be quoted a figure which includes everything. Other times the figure might only refer to the procedure itself and there may be extra costs for things like:

  • Anesthetic
  • Medications
  • Use of an operating room
  • Follow-up visits
  • Potential follow-up or enhancement surgeries

Cost and Value

Considering cost as an isolated aspect of a cosmetic procedure can lead to a misguided decision. Some people will choose their cosmetic surgeon based entirely on costs compared to other surgeons. But there are other factors to counter-balance the cost, such as:

  • Quality of medical service
  • Extent of experience the surgeon has in your desired procedure
  • How comfortable and safe you feel with your surgeon and his staff
  • The quality of materials and equipment in the surgeon's office - was the equipment bought second-hand? Is it properly maintained? Are the lasers properly calibrated?
  • Safety level of the office's medical routines. Is sterile procedure strictly followed? Are disposable items sometimes re-used? Are patient screening, surgeries, and follow-up visits all done by the same surgeon for each patient?
  • The surgeon's background and professional history - some surgeons have been reprimanded by their medical Board, or had their license suspended at some point in the past. With lawsuits being so common and often so frivolous these days, many doctors have been sued at some point, but if a doctor has been repeatedly sued, that might give you pause.
