Breast Augmentation - Frequently Asked Questions
In Newport Beach, California
What are the implants made of?
There are two types. The most commonly used is a silicone shell with a saline solution inside (sterile water with salt). These are cleared by the FDA and one big advantage is that if they rupture, your body can easily absorb the saline solution.
The other type is a silicone shell with a silicone gel inside. These are restricted by the FDA, but can be used in certain cases.
If I have breast implants, will I still start to sag after a while?
It’s in the nature of breasts to sag as time passes, because their weight stretches the skin. Our skin loses its tightness as we age delete, so with both of these tendencies, sagging will happen.
Implants do add some weight to the breast. But they also have a lifting effect. That’s because sagging involves skin stretching, which leads to excessive skin. The implant fills up that extra skin, giving a fuller and more lifted appearance.
Some women choose to have a breast lift at the same time as a breast augmentation. You can discuss this with your cosmetic surgeon and arrive at the best course of action for your particular case.
Do men like breast implants in a woman?
This question worries many woman, and it can have a very long answer, if you consider all factors.
First, no woman should have the breast augmentation procedure done unless she wants it for herself. A good cosmetic surgeon will want to discuss your reasons for having it done, and will not be keen to do it if you want it on account of your spouse or partner.
Some people, both women and men, are opposed to plastic surgery on moral or philosophical grounds, and this is part of their value system, not to be changed.
A threatening aspect of a breast augmentation procedure is that it’s likely to make you more attractive to many other men. This could un-nerve your partner, at least temporarily until you reassure him.
On the positive side, a successful breast augmentation can make a woman more confident, which itself is attractive to many men, and women as well. The reason for your added confidence doesn’t have to be known. Confidence is always pleasant to be around.
Will I be able to breastfeed if I have implants?
If you’re able to breastfeed without having any implants, then you’ll probably be able to do it after having them. There are several ways the implants can be inserted, mostly chosen by the scar results:
- Through the armpit – a well hidden scar
- From the navel – scar well hidden in the navel contours
- Through the areola (the darker area around the nipple) – scar camouflaged by the change in color of the areola
- From an incision beneath each breast – a more visible scar
If you have them inserted through the areola, there’s a risk of nerves and/or milk ducts being damaged or even severed. This would interfere with the milk flow or milk letting down, respectively.
No risk has been proved for the baby from breastfeeding with implants.
What is a Spectrum implant?
It’s a saline-filled implant that can be adjusted in size after the implant surgery. It has a thin tube attached to it, which can be left there for a few months, until things settle and you decide whether the implant is the right size. If you’d like to have it made bigger, the surgeon can add more saline solution through the tube. Or if you’d like it smaller, saline solution can be removed that way. When you’re happy with the size, the tube can be removed.
No surgery is required to adjust the amount of saline in the implant. The tube can be felt through the skin, so the surgeon gives some local anesthetic and uses a needle to inject the saline solution.
