Calf Augmentation (Implant) FAQ
Who is a good calf implant candidate?
A good calf augmentation candidate is anybody who is unhappy with the appearance or size of his or her calf muscles. For many people, the calves can be a very difficult area to gain muscle and shape from exercise or lifting weights.
If you are in good health and have realistic expectations about the results of calf implant surgery, then you may be a good calf augmentation candidate. The best way to determine if calf augmentation is right for you is to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Hendricks.
Are calf augmentation implants saline, like breast implants?
No. Calf augmentation implants are made out of silicone. This is because calf augmentation implants are custom made for each individual's needs. Silicone is light, solid, and is well tolerated by the body.
Calf augmentation implants are either made as two separate implants, or as one-piece implants. Having two implants creates a more natural look for the results, but one-piece calf augmentation implants can be used for reconstruction surgeries.
Why must I prevent straining the calf area after calf augmentation surgery?
After your calf augmentation surgery, it is important that you do not strain or stretch the calf area for a few weeks. After the surgery, it is suggested that you either use a wheelchair, or shoes or boots with 1 to 2 inch heels so that the muscles are as relaxed as possible.
Stretching or straining the calf muscles after calf augmentation can alter the shape of the implant pocket, giving you an unnatural looking result. Also, stretching the area could open the incision area or break the implant pocket, increasing scarring or chances of infection.
What are the calf augmentation risks?
Risks and complications associated with calf augmentation surgery are small and very rare. Risks include an adverse reaction to the anesthetic, excessive bleeding, loss of sensation in the area, and infection. If you feel excess pain, redness, or swelling after your calf augmentation procedure, contact Dr. Hendricks.
